One Week Left! Crux Collection Preview!
about 7 years ago – Thu, Feb 23, 2017 at 11:05:20 PM

Wow! Over 900 backers, 292% funded, and a whole week to go! How awesome is that? Of course, since we have 7 days to go, it's not quite time to start celebrating. Instead, it's time to keep pushing so we get over that 100K mark and unlock access to the Axitath add-on! Momentum is on our side, but that doesn't mean we can stop pushing! Keep visiting the Kicktraq page, share our project where you can, and start getting ready for the final countdown!

Today's update is about the Crux Collection. We've kept a lot of this one close to our chest, but with good reason. Since each solo scenario focuses on an individual character, the stories can be a little more involved, and so we want you to enjoy discovering these stories as you play.

That being said, below we will highlight a little bit of how the Crux Collection works and show off a bit of the mechanics behind 3 of the scenarios. Enjoy!

A common question we've received is "How do the solo scenarios work?" First, let's list what they have in common:

  • 1) They all focus on a single character
  • 2) They are played on a 16-space board setup rather than the normal 20.
  • 3) Normal Combat, Magic, Social, and Movement scores and rules apply.
  • 4) Normal Conviction/Nightmare rules apply (most of the time!)

Beyond that, our goal was to make each solo scenario as unique as possible. To demonstrate that, let's take a look at 3 different scenarios. Please keep in mind that we're still undergoing final passes when it comes to design and artwork, so you can consider most of these images "subject to change."

Hot Pursuit

Hot Pursuit joins Nikki Meeks in the middle of her latest adventure as a local police detective. She's been able to channel her CLEO Animus for a while now, and has been using it to help her in her non-magical investigations. Unfortunately, she's about to learn that such cavalier usage of her newfound power has its own consequences.

In this scenario, Nikki's Personal Reflection sees her tracking down what she thinks is a common criminal only to discover that it's actually... well, you'll have to wait and see.

Part of her investigation involves a web of couriers moving mysterious packages throughout the city. In addition to dealing with the normal issues surrounding a scenario such as following your Personal Reflection and managing your Conviction and Nightmare, every night phase one of these packages arrives in the city.

Nikki may choose to spend an action to intercept these packages, potentially costing her valuable time and slowly but surely allowing her Nightmare to rise. Then again, who knows what consequences these packages could bring once they've been delivered and the investigation is complete? Once Nikki has completed her investigation, she must come face-to-face with a new enemy who has been growing stronger under her nose.

Hot Pursuit puts an emphasis on action management and movement, forcing players to make movement decisions with imperfect knowledge of the long-term consequences of their choices and putting a premium on reaching the final encounter as soon as possible.

Brother's Keeper

As hard as it is to join a biker gang, Jerry is quickly finding out it's all that much harder to get out. Jerry's old crew decides he needs to buy himself out of the gang for a sum of money that's impossible for Jerry to get his hands on. To drive the point home, the gang has kidnapped Jerry's younger brother and have hidden him in a remote location, promising that Jerry is going to end up paying one way or another. With no way of paying the debt or any faith the gang would honor their word, Jerry must rescue his brother and put an end to the Gang leader who has haunted his dreams ever since he left.

Jerry must use his connections both from his underground past and his new-found Anima life to track his brother down before its too late. Every night, Jerry's brother takes another wound, emboldening the biker gang.

While Jerry can use his Paladin abilities to heal and protect his brother, time is not on his side. Once the Personal Reflection is complete, Jerry must still escort his brother to safety so Jerry can face down the gang leader and break free of his old life once and for all.

Brother's Keeper has three distinct sections. The first requires Jerry to balance moving through his Personal Reflection deck with properly using his healing and protective abilities to assist his captured brother. The second sees Jerry forced to keep a weaker character safe while traveling across the board to safety. The final section tests Jerry's resolve, as drained resources and a dangerous board stand between him and victory.

A Birth of Flame

Every day Blake Winters struggled with the same question. Did he control the flame, or did the flame control him? Some nights he wakes up singed, while other nights he bends the fire to his will. He has been playing with this power for some time now, but has not been able to fully unlock its secrets. What he is about to learn is that more than just his ability to manipulate fire has followed him into the real world.

Every night phase, the flames of Blake's dreams grow more and more out of control, manifesting into elemental beings, rapidly spreading through the city and rendering locations unusable and streets impassible. As chaos and destruction take over the city, Blake's actions will cast him as either an unlikely hero or an unwitting villain.

A Birth of Flame sees the player unleash their magical powers against an ever escalating army of enemies in order to maintain control over the board. The Personal Reflection also requires the players to choose between two paths, each of which offer their own benefits and complications as the player tries to conquer an ever-spreading threat.

We hope you've enjoyed this quick look at the Crux Collection! As always, feel free to leave feedback, comments, and questions!

Check out these painted miniatures by Elizabeth Beckley!
about 7 years ago – Tue, Feb 21, 2017 at 10:32:05 PM

Fun update today for those of you out there who enjoy painting your miniatures. A while back we had the pleasure of having 3 miniature prototypes painted by Miniature Mistress Elizabeth Beckley (check her out on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/MiniatureMistress/). While our miniatures do not come pre-painted, we thought this would be a nice preview of what could be for our painting-inclined backers.

Even if you don't have plans to paint your minis, we think you'll agree these images are really cool! (As a note, these models were 3D printed from our source files and then painted.)

Enjoy!

Another Stretch Goal Unlocked! Another NEW Stretch Goal Revealed!
about 7 years ago – Sun, Feb 19, 2017 at 11:29:30 PM

The second of three Laruna-based promo cards, the Sorcerer, has been unlocked!

The next stretch goal, which adds the Scion and the Infiltrator, has been updated on the campaign page to include the new artwork for the Scion and renders of both minis!

We've also added a new Stretch Goal at $90,000 for the third and final Laruna Alternate Animus promo card, the Lightbringer!

For today's update, I thought it would be fun to show off some of the "behind the scenes" work that went into the changes that went into this upcoming Stretch Goal.

While the Miracle Worker's representation worked well within the RPG, we knew that adapting the character to a board game (especially the 3d space of a mini) would require some changes. Rather than the slightly more "down to earth" variation of the Miracle Worker, we decided to make the character a bit more dramatic. Here's an early sketch of the new version:

While this rendition is indeed more dramatic, we felt we needed to go even further. We needed the Animus present in The Shared Dream to be iconic - you need to be able to glance at a miniature and know a lot of what's going on with that character.

A staff, a magical effect, and some more iconography was added. For the final, we had the anime style of the face and hair made a bit more realistic to match the rest of the game's artwork, along with a darker coloring scheme, and the Scion was born!

This character was then adapted to a 3d model that would fit with our manufacturing specifications and maintain the same style as the others:

Hope you enjoyed the update! As always, we love to hear your feedback, so please drop by and leave some comments on our main page!

You can also help us get closer to making the Scion a part of YOUR game by continuing to share our campaign and by visiting our campaign page on Kicktraq (https://www.kicktraq.com/projects/odampublishing/the-shared-dream-0/) and our product page on Board Game Geek (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/201861/dreams-and-magic-shared-dream

Thanks as always for your feedback, support, and your help spreading the word!
